Augmented Intelligence with the Charité
Our Augmented Intelligence approach combines the best of human expertise and artificial intelligence to support clinical decisions in a sustainable and verifiable way.
Making the right decisions:
In Europe, 3 out of 4 patients who die after a surgery have not received intensive care. Many of these patients would have benefitted from the higher level of care and surveillance offered by intensive care units (ICUs). As the number of beds in ICUs is limited, our cooperation partner, the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, was faced with the question of how to support physicians in deciding whether patients should be admitted to the ICU after surgery.
Our approach: Augmented Intelligence
Our expertise in cognitive and behavioral science allows us to identify transparent and intuitively interpretable decision algorithms based on cutting-edge science and methods from field research such as expert interviews.
Latest Machine Learning methods
We then test our intuitive algorithms, such as simple decision trees, for their predictive performance against the latest models from machine learning. Here, our models usually have similar predictive accuracy as more complex “black box” models.
Unlike black box models, our tools can be very easily implemented (e.g., in the form of a pocket card) with minimal training, they do not have high infrastructural requirements, and do not disrupt existing processes.
